Once we reached Mister’s car, Melody stopped me from getting in the front passenger seat. “Nu-uh. You’re in the back with me. We need to talk.”

I groaned as she forced me into the back seat and then got in on the other side.

“So, I guess I’m playing the part of the chauffeur tonight?” Mister said with a laugh when he entered the driver’s side. “In that case, do you want me to drop you off at Sir’s house down here, or are you planning on returning to Sunnyside with us, Melody?”

“The original plan was to stay at his place down here, but I think we have enough to discuss during the long trip home.” To my surprise, she smacked my arm with a scowl. “I can’t believe you went on a date with Calixto and didn’t tell me!”

I rubbed my upper arm. “Because it wasn’t technically a date.”

“It was totally a date,” Mister said.

I glared at him, even though he couldn’t see me in the dark. “You’re not helping.”

“I’m pretty sure getting you to come to terms with your feelings for Calixto is helping.”

“If you wanted to be subtle, you shouldn’t have gone all snarling ‘touch him and die’ caveman mode when Chance expressed an interest in Calixto,” Melody said with a snicker. “Not to mention the lingering glances at Calixto, where your face told anyone with eyes that being parted from him was such sweet sorrow.”

“You’ve got it bad for him,” Mister added. “You literally couldn’t look away from him the entire time we were in the dressing room. He was the only thing that existed for you at that moment. My question is, did you kiss him on your date?”

“No,” I peevishly denied. It still pissed me off we had been interrupted before I could take what Calixto had so willingly offered me.

Melody read through the lines, as per usual. “But you wanted to.”

Rather than confirm it, I pivoted. “Why are you both acting like you want me to date him?”

“Because we do,” they answered in unison.

“But why?” I asked in exasperation. “He’s twenty.”

“See, what I don’t understand is you didn’t angst this much over Alouette being twenty-four when you dated and married her,” Mister oh-so-helpfully reminded me. “What’s so different in those four years between her age and Calixto’s that’s the issue for you?”

I shrugged. “Maybe because I’m hung up on the morality of Calixto being younger than my son?”

Melody scoffed. “Bullshit. You didn’t even blink an eye when I reminded you Alouette was young enough to be our daughter. All you said was, ‘But she’s not,’ as your incredibly weak defense. What’s your real reason for resisting this?”

“If you don’t know, I’d be more than happy to tell you,” Mister said.

“Then by all means, please enlighten me,” I sarcastically requested.

“Your ego loved Alouette chasing after you, and your dick appreciated a pretty young thing like her being eager to please it.” Mister’s blunt accuracy made me scowl. I sounded like the world’s most shallow bastard when he put it that way.
